The demise of ERP, Enterprise Resource Planning, has long been rumored as a new generation of cloud based applications and platforms have emerged in the marketplace. On premise ERP solutions dominated the landscape in an era of manufacturing, but now we live in a world changed by a services-based economy. The advent of “the Cloud” has raised the question again: Will this be the end of ERP as we knew it?

Traditional ERP is expensive, challenging to deploy, and often hard to use. New cloud offerings are purported to be nimble, easy to use, and much cheaper—often offering a low monthly fee as opposed to a huge capital expenditure. But if old ERP does die, what will really take its place? Will cloud applications be able to handle the complexity of financial, HR, and supply chain needs? Is pay as you go really cheaper? What about security? How will service outages handled?
